Tips To Manage Holiday Waste

Tips to manage holiday waste so that all the boxes, gift wrapping, food containers and unwanted presents don’t overflow your trash cans!

According to Stanford University, “Americans throw away 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s holiday period than any other time of year. The extra waste amounts to 25 million tons of garbage, or about 1 million extra tons per week!”

Below are a few tips to help minimize holiday waste.

Tip for Managing Holiday Waste

Who Has Trash Detail?

It may be “the most wonderful time of the year,” but it can also be the busiest time of the year.  By renting a roll-off container, you can take one thing off your “to-do” list. A roll-off container will eliminate overflowing trash cans and one or two extra trips to a transfer station.

If you don’t want to rent a roll-off container for the holiday season, consider the following:

Choose Intangible Gifts

Instead of sending greeting cards through the mail, send them electronically.  Did you know gift cards work virtually as easily as non-perishable plastic cards?  And the wonderful thing about virtual gift cards is you know the receiver is getting the gift they will use that won’t end up in the trash pile.

Dig Out Reusable Items

I bet you have a huge array of items that you can repurpose or even up cycle.  Items like over-sized scarves, handkerchiefs, brown paper bags and maps make creative wrapping paper.  Paint or decorate Amazon boxes to reuse as gift boxes.  Plastic containers that held produce or cheese trays can be used as gift boxes and are great for disguising the true identity of a present.

Give to Charity

Check with your local church to see if they are collecting items for a family who is struggling this year.  Tell your family everyone is getting one less present so that you can provide a needed gift for someone who is less fortunate.

Don’t let holiday trash overwhelm you!
