Revamp the basement for the kids to keep them busy and out of your hair this winter.  Cold weather outside can lead to too many hours inside.  One way to keep the whole family sane is to change your basement into a play area filled with fun and educational stations.

Sensory Table

If you have toddlers set up a sensory table to introduce them to a variety of hands on learning.  Sensory tables are great for building concentration and motor skills all while having fun and getting messy.

If the basement is carpeted place a washable play mat under the table or set the table inside of a baby pool to contain spills, dirt or sand.

Mini Kitchen

For children three and up create a mini kitchen.   This is another great learning opportunity for kids to work on imaginative play and practice motor skills.

Stock the kitchen with play food, utensils, pots and pans and watch your children become master chefs.

Dress Up

Dress up is another favorite way to stave off boredom.  I know two boys who loved their super hero costumes and not many girls who couldn’t resist their mom’s beads, long scarfs and handbags.  Decorate a small corner of the basement with a full-length mirror, wall hooks, a big box of accessories, a trunk of fun clothes and costumes (including old Halloween stuff) and watch your child’s imagination run wild.

Climbing Wall

When the kids are literally climbing the walls send them up the wall!   Here is an article on how to build a safe DYI climbing wall.  It’s not as complicated as you may think.  A few simple things like a gymnastics mat, plywood, and climbing holds will have your kids thinking they are Indiana Jones.

Gaming Center

Lastly, build a media – game night center.  This is a wonderful way to spend quality time together as a family.

Yard sales and Thrift Stores are great places to find a big comfy couch, an entertainment center with shelves, a monitor, a portable popcorn machine and table with four to six chairs.

Keep board games and playing cards on the shelves.  Designate a gaming night or just call an impromptu gaming day.
