Why We Should Support Local Businesses

Why We Should Support Local Businesses

Why we should support local businesses and how this applies specifically to the roll-off container business.  Often, it’s little more than a marketing pitch – something stuck in between sale signs on a supermarket shelf. The reason we should buy local; however, runs a little deeper than the managers special on eggs.

Why we should support local businesses

So, why is it beneficial to buy local?

It all comes down to community.

Everyone knows that in order to be a good citizen of our democracy, we have to vote. Voting is often considered, in fact, to be the essential responsibility Americans have to the functioning of government, aside, perhaps, from paying taxes. But democracy is only a political system – really only half of the equation. What about economics? What about being a good citizen of a capitalist democracy?

We don’t have to wait until we’re in the polling booth to cast our votes. We vote every day when we decide where to spend our money. Each dollar that goes to Walmart or Best Buy is a dollar that comes out of the pocket of a mom-and-pop retailer. Each dollar that goes to online shopping represents a loss to the local tax base. But so, what? We’re saving money, so it’s worth it, right?

According to an info graphic from thelocalexchangemarietta.com, local retailers generate 70% more economic activity per square foot than big box stores. That graphic contains another particularly surprising statistic; if every American family spent $10 more a month at local businesses, over $9 billion would be directly returned to local economies across the nation.

How does this apply to the hauling business?

The town general store has long been seen as a victim of our changing economy. But beyond the so-called “retail apocalypse” are a whole host of other local businesses that have been hit hard by the trend’s corporate consolidation and globalization of the last 20 years. Hauling is no exception.

Transportation costs are a major part of many industries. In hauling; however, transportation essentially is the cost. The closer to home your roll-off container rental provider is, the lower the fuel costs and environmental impact are. At R&R containers, we keep our service area small, and pass the savings on to you!

When you order a roll-off container from a corporation or chain, oftentimes you’re not even in contact with the people who will actually be providing your container rental. Big corporations act as dealers, hiring someone else to do the job and lining their pockets by overcharging you. Go straight to the source with R&R containers.

Whether you need some minor junk hauling or a regular dumpster pickup, R&R is your local source. Support our Marietta community with your dollars – call today at 770-975-9554.

How to Remove Old Kitchen Cabinets

How to Remove Old Kitchen Cabinets

How to remove old kitchen cabinets while remodeling when you are on a tight budget.  Taking out the old cabinets isn’t as hard or as time consuming as you may think.  All you need are a few tools, a little sweat equity and a plan to dispose of the old cabinets.  If they are in fairly good shape, you can sell or donate them.  If the cabinets are beyond restoring, call your local roll-off container company and have them deliver a dumpster right to your backdoor.

How to Remove old kitchen cabinets

Gathering the Tools

There are a few specific tools that you will need to get the job done such as:

  • Pry bar
  • Razor knife
  • Putty knife
  • Hammer
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Step stool
  • Tarp or old blanket

Don’t forget the safety googles and gloves.

Preparing the Cabinets and Countertops

Empty out the cabinets and clear everything off of the countertops.  For extra protection, cover the counter tops with a tarp or old blanket.

Turn the power off to any electrical outlets you will be working around.

Taking Apart the Cabinets

Once the area is demolition ready, begin removing the doors and shelving.  Unscrew the doors from the cabinet body.  Keep the hinges attached to the door.  Lift out the drawers and shelves, leaving the brackets in place.  This will make it easier to reassemble the cabinets if you are selling or donating them.

Removing the Frame Work

Most cabinets have been finished off with caulk to keep water from getting behind the cabinets and/or to hide imperfections during the installment process.  Cut the caulk with the razor knife or putty knife.  Slip the pry bar between the wall and cabinet frame and gentle tap on the hammer to finish breaking the seal.

Taking Down the Cabinets

If you do not have a helper to hold the cabinets, find something to put under the cabinets to support them such as a stack of books or a sturdy box.

Unscrew any fasteners that connect the cabinets together.  Next, remove the screws that attach the cabinets to the wall or floor.  Before removing the final screws, make sure the cabinet is not going to fall of you or something else.

When the final screw is out, lift the cabinet up and away from the wall.   Congratulations, on a job well done!

Now, have you picked out your new cabinets?

Roll-off Container Rentals vs. Dumpster Bags

Roll-off Container Rentals vs. Dumpster Bags

Roll-off container rentals vs. dumpster bags to help with remodeling projects and/or house decluttering.  Even the smallest project can produce a huge pile of trash.  For instance, a small bathroom can produce up to a 150 lbs. per square foot of debris.  That can add up quickly. So, what is the best option?

Roll-off Container Rentals vs. Dumpster Bags

  • Haul the stuff yourself to the dump (this could get expensive and time consuming)
  • Purchase a dumpster bag
  • Rent a roll-off container

Most people are familiar with roll-off containers but less so with dumpster bags.  A dumpster bag is a portable, small collapsible container that you can use to dispose of a variety of materials. Bags can be purchased from home improvement stores or online retailers.  Once the dumpster bag is filled, a waste management company will need to be contacted to pick up and dispose of it.  Note, pick up service for bags isn’t available in all municipalities.  Before you purchase a dumpster bag, call your local waste management to confirm curbside service.

To Bag or Not to Bag

  • A dumpster bag is only good for three cubic yards or less of debris. It is about a 600-gallon container and roughly eight by four by 2.5 feet high.
  • The maximum weight is around 3,000 pounds, so if your project involves heavy materials like rock, sand or bricks, after one cubic yard you will be at your weight limit.
  • Dumpster bags are nowhere near as sturdy as a metal roll-off container.
  • Dumpster bags are reusable.
  • Dumpster bags are convenient for small jobs.

To Roll-off Container or Not to Roll-off Container

  • Roll-off containers come in different sizes. They start as small as 10 cubic yards and go all the way up to 40 cubic yards.
  • Roll-off containers are delivered to your door and picked up when you are finished.
  • Roll-off containers are designed to be easy on driveways and lawns.
