Memorial Day is an American holiday, celebrated on the last Monday of May. Many Americans observe this day by visiting memorials and cemeteries, waving flags at their local parade or backyard barbecues. Officially, it became a holiday in 1971. Unofficially, it announces the beginning of summer.
Originally, it was called Decoration Day. It started during the years following the Civil War.
The Civil War was responsible for more lives claimed than any other U.S. conflict. It was the beginning of the nation’s first national cemeteries. As early as 1860 Americans in many cities and towns had begun the springtime ritual of honoring these countless fallen soldiers. Graves were decorated with flowers, family possessions and numerous prayers recited.
No one is exactly sure when this tradition started. Was is founded by individual communities or did everyone come together for the memorial tributes? Whichever, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. This town was chosen because of its annual community event during which time residents decorated the graves of soldiers and businesses closed.
So, whether you are tossing another burger on the grill or decorating the grave of a fallen heroes, remember Memorial Day is a day of honoring the men and women who died while serving our country so that you can be free.
