Local Business is a corner stone of every community.
I really am not surprised by all the chains opening on every corner. Larger companies have greater financial backing and they pay less for inventory because they buy it in greater quantities. I have taken pride in finding locally owned businesses and spending my money with them because I have a sense that I am paying my “neighbor” instead of some beast of a corporation, that may not even live in my country, much less my town.
There are many reasons why we should support our local businesses:
- Keeping dollars in our local economy.
- Promote the traditions of your community.
- Protect an industry from being “monopolized” by the big guys.
- Local businesses are respectful with their use of space and structure.
- Attracts tourism. No one wants to visit a town full of chains.
- Entrepreneurship is a fundamental American Quality.
- Thriving local business allows for stability of employment to town residents.
A local business has that personal touch.They remember you and your name, they don’t have to hire someone to stand and greet you on cue.

How much trash are you throwing away? What is it?
We all make trash every day. We throw it in the trash can. Then someone takes the trash out. Then one day a week, a large, loud truck comes to get it. These trucks, as I refer to as “overheads” pick up the bins and dump them into a compactor, set the bins back down and leave. This regular trash service is mainly for the purpose of everyday trash. You probably pay a “refuse” bill, my bill is part of my water bill.
Then there are times that you have more trash than will fit into your bin. Like Christmas time… or spring cleaning… or fall cleaning… or
“I’m feeling ambitious and I’m tired of climbing through the garage” cleaning.
Sometimes you can cram all this stuff into your bin and sometimes you can’t.
So then come the “roll off containers” (aka dumpster, can, box.) these are to haul trash from household or yard clean-up or remodeling and construction level projects. Sometimes one will due and sometime you’ll need many. The reason is it called a roll off is because the container is rolled onto the truck and rolled off. Larger containers are used for larger jobs and smaller containers are used for smaller jobs and the disposal or recycling of dirt, concrete, asphalt and other aggregate.

- One cubic yard equals 1 yard wide x 1 yard long x 1 yard high. A 6′ dumpster will hold 6 cubic yards.
- A 72″ couch will take up 1/3 of a 6 cubic yard container.
- A twin mattress will take up 1/4 of a 6 cubic yard container.
- A 10 yard dumpster will hold 5 to 10 tons, depending on materials.
- 12 and 20 cubic yard dumpsters are the most popular rentals and accommodate small to medium residential projects.
- 30 cubic yard dumpsters are ideal for major home renovations and demolition.
The list of restricted items includes: TVs, refrigerators, paints, solvents, asbestos, liquids, and other chemicals and toxic materials.

A Sanitary Landfill is where non-hazardous waste, residential trash, green waste, construction waste is spread and compacted between layers of soil and dirt.
A Secure Landfill is specifically designed for the disposal of hazardous waste. At these landfills holes and trenches are lined with impervious plastic sheeting to prevent leaking and leaching of environmentally dangerous materials into the soil and water supply.
A Transfer Station is a service offered in many communities that acts as a intermediate location for waste disposal, at which recyclables and refuse are collected and sorted before processing to a final disposal site.

There are several different sizes of Roll Off Rental Dumpsters available for you to rent when you are considering any type of clean-up project. Below I’ve listed these sizes so you can get an idea of the container best suited to your needs.

10 Yard Dumpster

A 10 yard dumpster is one of the smallest size roll off dumpsters for rent. A 10 yard dumpster holds 10 cubic yards of waste. This dumpster size is perfect for tighter spaces and smaller trash loads. A ten yard dumpster is a good size dumpster for a 1 car garage or small basement cleanout. See table to the right for typical 10 yard dumpster dimensions.
20 Yard Dumpster
- 20 Yard L=23.5′ W=8′ H=4.5′
A 20 yard dumpster is designed to hold 20 cubic yards of waste. This open top dumpster size is a good size for a kitchen or bathroom remodel project. A twenty yard dumpster will hold approximately 300 square feet of deck debris from a decking project. This dumpster bin is a good size for a 2 car garage clean-out. 30 Yard Dumpster
- 30 Yard L=23.5′ W=8′ H=6.5′
A 30 yard dumpster is a good size for foreclosures, evictions, estate cleanouts. Thirty yard dumpsters can hold 30 cubic yards of waste. They are ideal for roofing removal, demolition debris, basement cleanouts. See table to the right for typical 30 yard dumpster dimensions.
40 Yard Dumpster
- 40 Yard L=23.5′ W=8′ H=8.5′
A 40 yard dumpster is the largest size dumpster for rent. A forty yard dumpster holds 40 cubic yards of garbage waste. 40 yard dumpsters are ideal for large cleanouts, large construction and remodeling projects. See table to the right for typical 40 yard dumpster dimensions.
