Fetus Found In Trash

Georgia mourns when a fetus is found in the Trash!

As I searched for a topic to blog about I saw story after story about this incident. Being a member of the waste disposal community and a member of a larger community of mothers, this story strikes close to home. I have read several articles about the recent discovery of landfill workers finding a fetus in their recycling sort. Truthfully, this is so incredibly hard to wrap my head around I am almost speechless; which is tough because I am a writer. I simply can not ignore this story.

The highlight is the outpouring of the community to want to reach out to the woman who felt it necessary to make this decision. I do appreciate the stance of law enforcement to focus their attention on the well being of the mother. This is a tragedy that a woman would feel so lost and alone that she would have to make a choice like this. The pure depression of the miscarriage itself or what ever the actual story may be is a sign that we need to care for each other more and reach into the lives of the less fortunate to be sure they know they are loved.

I am not going to glamorize this I will simply say, I pray for you, Miss, where ever you are and I send love and blessings to you in hopes that you are comforted by the love you need in this time.

Recycling Program Changes in Marietta

Marietta is not discontinuing recycling, we are changing how we recycle.

At the beginning of city wide recycling programs, residents and business owners would have to separate and deliver recyclable to collection sites. Then solid waste would come to the home or business to pick up the already separated materials. Now, as technology has improved and funds are made available to upgrade equipment, solid waste is capable of separating “on location.”

Recycling separates

Marietta is proud to offer this service, as a city, to its residents and business owners at this time. Solid Waste of Marietta has posted this:

MARIETTA – All red and green dumpsters labeled “SP” that were previously used to recycle newspapers will no longer be emptied and their contents will not be recycled, so please do not place anything in these dumpsters as they are out of commission. Please, just put the paper in your curbside recycling bin. Thanks so much for your efforts through the years!

For more information regarding the City’s environmental services or to request a recycling bin, please visit the website.

This is the next phase for recycling materials that is a much more convenient model for residents and businesses. There are still recycling centers around the city and county accepting materials as listed in the document attached.

Christmas Tree Recycling Ideas

‘Tis the Season for Christmas Trees

Christmas Tree

Depending on how you feel about the holidays sometimes prevents your excitement about getting a Christmas Tree. You may have switched to an artificial tree. You may not have a tree at all. Well some of us still look forward to going to the local Christmas Tree Lot to search for the perfect tree. There is usually a chill in the air and festive Christmas music jingling through the lot.

You finally pick the one… Rope it to the roof of your car.. Head home. After you select the perfect spot in the family room, you lace it with lights, hang time honored ornaments, and then add a few new beauties you found at the local craft fair or souvenir shop from your yearly vacation spot. Then you sit back on the sofa sipping your favorite hot chocolate with mini marshmallows.

After spending several days or weeks enjoying your beautiful Christmas Tree it will be time to say goodbye. Now what?

Some towns have a pick up or drop off point but I found other opportunities from the National Christmas Tree Association:

  • Curb side pick up
  • Drop off site for recycling
  • Cut/Saw tree into smaller pieces and put in yard waste
  • Soil erosion barriers
  • Fish feeders
  • Bird feeders
  • Mulch
  • Line trail for hiking

Gone With The Wind is honored by Marietta

Monday, December 15, 2014, Marietta honors the anniversary of a historic jewel of our community:

Gone With The Wind (the original)

Seventy five years ago, this beloved jewel of Georgia, Gone With the Wind, premiered at the Loew’s Grand Theatre in Atlanta Georgia. In attendance were the Stars and Starlets of this Hollywood Film. Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, and Hattie McDaniel. As seen in the clips below, Hollywood’s all stars were giving a warm southern welcome.

Watch this original news footage.

In this clip you can see the pride in preparation provided by Atlanta to welcome visitors for the premier.

Gone With The Wind is a classic, Pulitzer Prize winning novel written in 1936 by Georgia native Margaret Mitchell. The novel sold one million copies in its first six months and has been translated into over 40 languages.

Mitchell, a first time novelist, sold the screen production rights before the book was published for a whopping $50,000. The film went on to yield 13 Oscar nominations, 10 wins, presenting the first African American to win an Academy Award. Not to mention the now decades of re-screens and memorabilia.

The City of Marietta, GA, will honor this American Classic on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 6:30 (actual showtime 7:00) at the Marietta Performing Arts Center on the Marietta High School campus. Please visit the Marietta Performing Arts website for details and tickets. Seats are limited.
